Although we are only a short way into 2013, there are already some clear leaders in the smartphone market – and that’s before the rest of this year’s offerings are launched. Let’s have a very brief look at 6 of the very best smartphones of 2013:
iPhone 5
Apples latest offering, the iPhone 5 is now 6 months old and it really is a smartphone in more than one sense of the word. Dressed in stylish anodized aluminum and glass its packed full of Apple’s best features. It’s slightly bigger but lighter than its predecessor and runs on a dual-core 1.2GHz A6 processor with a triple core GPU, making it faster and more powerful than any other iPhone before it.
Galaxy S4
This is Samsung’s brand new flagship, due for release at the end of April and it certainly looks like its going to live up to the hype that surrounds it. While it looks just as good as any other Galaxy model the main changes to this are in the software. Samsung have introduced several new features such as air gesture and air play along with an on-the-fly translator.
HTC One
Due for release at any time, this phone is HTC’s bid to get a stronger foothold in the Smartphone market. And, it’s not a bad handset to be going on with. It’s got a bigger screen than many, at 4.7”, with a 1080 x 1920 resolution. It also has the advantage of being able to work on 4G LTE networks where available. Add in their new 4 megapixel, Ultra pixel camera and a 1.7 GHz processor to the mix and you’ve got a handset that may just give the leaders some strong competition.
Sony Experia Z
Just released by Sony, the Experia Z boasts a screen that is both scratch resistant and shatterproof. The phone itself is said to be dust and water-resistant, being able to be submerged to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. It has a 13.1 megapixel camera and 16GB of internal storage, which is expandable by way of the Micro SD slot by up to a further 64GB. It also has a 1.5GHz processor giving it speed and efficiency.
Blackberry Z10
This is Blackberry’s “bet the farm” model, their last-ditch attempt at staying in the market. It runs on their brand new OS, Blackberry 10 which, by all accounts, is certainly enough to give it a shot. It has an 8 megapixel camera, a 1.5GHz processor and 16GB of internal storage which is also expandable up to an extra 64GB. Already released in UK, Canada and Indonesia, it’s due to hit the US market any time now.
Nokia Lumia 920
Released in November last year, the Nokia Lumia is certainly a nice phone to look at. Its hardware is pretty standard; 8 megapixel camera, 32GB internal storage which is not expandable and a 1.5 GHz dual core processor. It is running on Windows Phone 8, Nokia’s attempt to boost their sales after ditching the unpopular OS, Symbian.
All of these phones have their good and bad sides, but they are the top of the pile and choice really comes down to personal preference. Which one have you got ?

The beginning of a new week always seems to see the release of a few concepts and idea regarding future iOS devices and this week is no exception. 3-D artist, Martin Hajek, has given us his iPhone 6 concept. His design has a 4.6” display with an edge-to-edge screen but it retains the standard Apple aluminum body with a black and silver backing – a bit of a mash-up between the back of the iPad and the dual color of the iPhone 5.
There’s no home button in evidence and it has much slimmer bezels than the current iPhone offerings. Many concepts have removed the home button – partly because it gives more room for a bigger screen and partly because people want to see fingerprint technology brought into play. Apple acquired sensor developers Authentic last year for a cool $356 million and many believe that this technology will eventually make its way into future Apple products.
The 4.6” screen is not a new concept; many want to see a larger display area and, indeed, rumor has it we may well be seeing it sooner than we think. However, despite the oversize screen, thee iPhone would still be classed as a smartphone, not a phablet.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Features And Launch details

In line with previous rumors, the Samsung Galaxy S4 comes with a lot of horespower under the hood, with an octa core processor which is actually just a combination of 2 quad core processors and a full HD screen in a thin and
light polycarbonate shell that disappointingly looks almost the same as the Samsung Galaxy S3. While it doesn’t look that great, there’s some pretty great features which we will detail below, here’s the specsheet:Samsung Galaxy S4 Specs and Features:

- CPU: 1.8 GHz quad core ARM Cortex-A15 and 1.2 GHz quad core ARM Cortex-A7
- GPU: PowerVR SGX 544MP
- RAM: 2 GB RAM
- Storage: 16/32/64 GB, expandable via MicroSD to 64 GB
- Screen: 4.99 inches Super AMOLED HD, 1920 x 1080 (441 ppi)
- Camera: 13 MP rear facing (1080P video recording), 2 MP front facing camera (1080P video recording)
- Connectivity: Bluetooth v4.0, NFC, Wi-fi, MicroUSB 2.0 slot,3G, 4G LTE
- Battery: 2600 mAh
- OS: Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2
So, octa core processor sounds fantastic, but it’s not really what you think. It’s based off of ARM’s big.LITTLE technology which switches between the set of powerful A15 cores and energy efficient A7 cores. The Cortex-A7 is a less power hungry line of processors that will be used for low power applications and the A15 cores will kick in when there’s real power required. This way, Samsung aims for both power and efficiency.
Samsung is really banking on its innovative features added by the TouchWiz interface and the focus is clearly function over form. The great part is that unlike a lot of flagships, the Galaxy S4 still features a removable battery and expandable storage, so no compromises there. The Galaxy S4 will be capable of hexa band LTE and supports both FD-LTE and TD-LTE, which makes it truly a world phone.
While the basic interface looks very similar to previous phones, there’s a lot more hidden under there, some of which are evolutions of existing features. Just like theSamsung Galaxy Note 2 there’s Air View, or floating touch using fingers that lets you preview photos, videos or highlight things without actually touching the screen. This also works with the lock screen, hovering over it results in a nifty animation. Air Gestures let you scroll through an album or webpage by just swiping your finger across the screen as well, which is not of much use actually.
The oft rumored eye scrolling didn’t make the cut, instead there’s Smart Pause which pauses a video when you look away from the screen and Smart Scroll which scrolls webpages when you tilt the phone up or down. Included also, like the HTC One, is a IR blaster which lets you control you home entertainment system, powered by Peel. Sharing is also a large focus here and a new Group Play function lets you simultaneously connect upto 8 Galaxy S4′s at once to play a song or share media, as well as play games, as of now which there are two.
S Health is an app that uses all the sensors packed in plus a new temperature and humidity sensor to monitor your health and fitness, including workout regimen, diet, blood sugar and more plus also has basic medical information. The S Translator app provides speech to text and text to speech translation of 9 languages as of now and will be a boon for travelers. For businesses and enterprises, there’s Samsung Knox, which adds an extra layer of security and isolation for files and data and doesn’t allow intermixing, something like BlackBerry balance on the BlackBerry Z10.
Most of the innovations come with the new 13 MP camera which incorporates a lot of the Galaxy Camera features and interface. A new Dual Camera mode lets you take photos with both cameras at once so that even the person taking the photo can be added to the picture with a customizable and movable frame. This dual camera features extends to ChatON and video chat, so that you can show the other person both yourself as well as your surroundings. Then there’s Drama Shot, which captures upto a 100 shots at once and creates one overlapping shot with all of them together. Samsung’s Eraser feature works like Nokia’s SmartShoot and lets you get the best picture by deleting unwanted elements. The CinemaGram features lets you selectively animate a picture, again just like Nokia’s CinemaGraph. Finally, the story album feature lets you create an album from one set of photos taken in a day or at a particular place.
All in all the Samsung Galaxy S4 looks like a fantastic device, although it isn’t the revolution is was made out to be. With a global launch by the end of April, there’s no doubt that it’s going to sell and it’s going to sell well. Although pricing hasn’t been announced, the Galaxy S4 could be priced at $725 off contract and we know for a fact that no matter the higher price, it’s going to fly off the shelves.
